«THE USE OF THE VERNACULAR IN CHURCH BOOKS»: THE VOCABULARY OF PULIUY’S TRANSLATION OF THE PSALMS INTO UKRAINIAN

Abstract

The article presents the results of lexical and stylistic research of the most frequent lexemes used by I. Puliuy in the Ukrainian translation of the Psalms. Among the frequently used lexical units, the following are analyzed, in particular: word-forming nest with the root -держ-(derzh-); verbs with the prefixes voz- (воз-)(вос-), iz-, so-; nouns брань (bran’), победида (pobedyda), чертог (chertog), другиня(druhynia), твориво(tvoryvo), etc. The presentation and stylistic marking of these lexemes in the Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language is described. Relevant conclusions are made regarding the reproduction and preservation in the texts of the translation of the Psalms into Ukrainian of connections with the traditions of the development of the literary language, with the customary norms of word usage in the Ukrainian educated environment of the ІІ-d 19th – early 20th centuries through the use of Old (Church) Slavonic, vernacular and dialect vocabulary as means of creating a solemn, poetic, sublime color of speech, typical of high style.Attention is also focused on the nation-building position of I. Puliuy as a translator, teacher, physicist-scientist, public and political figure of the second half of the 19th - early 19th century. His role in the formation and development of the sacred style of the new Ukrainian literary language, its further churchization, is emphasized.Linguistic studies of the translation work of sacred texts into Ukrainian by I. Puliuy by such well-known scholars as: V. Nimchuk, M. Lesyuk, I. Farion. The monograph by I. Farion «Language portrait of Ivan Puliuy (based on the letters of the thinker)» is highlighted, which reveals the linguistic and political worldview and linguistic practice of the outstanding scientist-physicist and translator of the Bible into Ukrainian.The presented publication was carried out on the basis of its own previous research in the anniversary year for Ivan Puliuy – the 180th anniversary of his birth – with the aim of duly honoring the scientist, in particular his translation activities.
