ON THE PHENOMENON OF INTERRELATIONS AND INTERACTIONS BETWEEN BRUNO SCHULZ AND GALICIA

Abstract

The offered study completes the series of the author’s publications on the investigation of the problem of interrelations and interactions between Galicia as the most famous Ukrainian border territories and one of the prominent Galician writers of the first half of the 20th century, Bruno Schulz, with an emphasis on those points that in one way or another represent the Galician-Schulz interrelations. The problem is multifaceted in all its specific manifestations, the dialectics of such relations is also diverse and unique. The history of Schulz literary discourse can in a certain way be called the history of Galicia and vice versa. In the article the points of contact and intersection between Galicia and Bruno Schulz as a representative of the corresponding Galician reality are outlined; it is characterized by the binary pair of nomens Galicia ↔ representative of the Galician border area Bruno Schulz; the interactions between the Galician reality and the formation and development of Bruno Schulz as a world-famous artist are clarified. The author concludes that the outlined interactions are of equal magnitude: both the entire multifaceted heritage of the Galician artist Bruno Schulz can be considered a consequence of the real history, existence, and development of the multicultural and multinational Galician region and an original product of the myth-making of Galicians and a significant share of information, knowledge, and experience of the Galician direction can be associated with Schulz literary, literary studies, artistic and translation discourse – the source base for research on Galicia. Joining the further analysis of material from Schulz’s letters, thoughts, articles, or visual discourse will allow supplementing and representing the dialectics of Bruno Schulz’s interrelations with Galicia, seeing them through the prism of the multifaceted creativity of Bruno Schulz, the Polish-language writer of Jewish origin from Drohobych, Galicia, Lviv region.
