UKRAINIAN RELIGIOUS PHRASEOLOGY IN LEXICOGRAPHIC WORKS OF THE END OF THE 20TH – BEGINNING OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Abstract

The article describes the religious phraseology that was included in the Ukrainian lexicographic works of the late 20th - early 21st centuries. It is noted that the Ukrainian phraseologists of the posttotalitarian era managed to restore the ancient traditions of researching and recording religious phraseology in dictionaries, in contrast to the Soviet totalitarian period, when scientists, in favor of the ruling ideology, tried to create the illusion of the absence of these linguistic means in the history of Ukrainian culture and the living speech of Ukrainians using pseudo-scientific methods. The study of religious phraseology gained special relevance during the Russian-Ukrainian war, which accelerated the processes of de-Russification and de-Sovietization of our society as much as possible, which in turn appeared on the foundation constructed by Ukrainian intellectuals, particularly in the area of overcoming stereotypes of the totalitarian and post-colonial era. On the basis of a detailed analysis of a number of lexicographic works of the specified period, it has been found that the frequency of recording Ukrainian religious phraseology in both general language and phraseological dictionaries has increased, and Ukrainian linguists have developed modern, scientifically based methods of processing and recording these linguistic units, which reflects the worldview trends of native speakers. If in the eleven-volume «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» only 50 phraseological units with the words God, God were recorded, then already in the «Phraseological Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» in two volumes there are more than 80 of them, in the lexicographic work «Phraseology of Mykola Lukash’s Translations» – almost 140, in the twenty-volume «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» – more than 200 (including all variants). The preface to the twenty-volume «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» states that one of the foundations of its formation is the most complete presentation of the vocabulary and phraseology of the Holy Scriptures, in addition, the new dictionary declares the use of more than 1,000 units of illustrative material from the texts of the Bible.
