Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the category of emotionality at the phonetic and graphic levels of Emily Brontë’s work “Wuthering Heights” in Ukrainian translation. The purpose of the article is to analyse the problems of the reproduction of the category of emotionality at the phonetic–graphic level when translating the English version into Ukrainian on the example of the work of the English writer E. Bronte “Wuthering Heights”, translated by O. Andriyash. The article uses a comprehensive methodology: analysis, synthesis, comparative analysis. The scientific novelty of the work lies in a detailed analysis of the phonetic and graphic sides of the Ukrainian translation of the work. The topic is relevant given that there are currently an insufficient number of Ukrainian translations of English works. The peculiarity of the translator’s work is his skill to reflect in the translation of works not only the semantics of emotives, but also the style of the author of the original, his inner world. It is stated that the complex of phonetic, graphic, lexical, syntactic and other techniques are used in the transmission of emotions. Phonetic and graphic levels are characterized by features of intonation, tempo, logical emphasis, punctuation marks (exclamation mark, dash, three dots, etc.). The author’s idiosyncrasy becomes noticeable already at the phonetic level. It is manifested both in the sound of the text and in its graphic design. Analysis of the translation of the work “Wuthering Heights” is characterised by the following phonetic and graphic features of emotionality: punctuation, exclamation marks, alliteration, change of graphic symbols, capitalization. The analysis of the Ukrainian translation of the work “Wuthering Heights” by O. Andriyash showed that there are substitutions of capitalization, alliteration by semantic means, or partial phonetic reproduction of the original (incomplete alliteration). Such substitutions require detailed analysis, as each translation technique demonstrates a different degree of emotionality. It is important for the translator to reproduce the originality of the work as much as possible, using appropriate translation techniques.
