O. DEYCH’S «UKRAINIKA» – AUTHOR OF THE STORY ABOUT LESYA UKRAINKA «LOMYKAMIN (SAXIFRAGE)»

Abstract

The article is about an outstanding Ukrainian writer, scientist, translator, art and literary critic, who was born, raised and educated – on the border of cultures and languages (Ukrainian, Jewish and Russian) in Kyiv, about Oleksandr Yosypovych Deych. Attention is drawn to the cultural environment in which the worldview of O. Deych was formed, there was interest and love and respect for Ukrainian literature and theater. Biographical facts related to the researcher’s interest in the life of Ukrainian writers, in particular Lesya Ukrainka, are being clarified. Creative and friendly ties are traced, which became the basis for translations of Ukrainian literature and its popularization at the world level – acquaintance with M. Starytsky, M. Zankovetska, the Kosach family, friendship and cooperation with M. Rylsky, Les Kurbas. The conditions and stages of emergence, formation and development of the «Ukrainian context» in the creative heritage and scientific and translation activities of O. Deych are revealed. O. Deych’s «Ukrainika» is analyzed – his Russian translations, articles, memoirs, essays on the representatives of Ukrainian culture – I. Kotlyarevsky, T. Shevchenko, V. Stefanyk, Lesya Ukrainka, Les Kurbas, M. Kulish, etc. Special attention is paid. correspondence and friendship with M. Rylsky. Emphasis is placed on research about O. Deych himself – unfortunately, currently few and inconspicuous. The article lists the most significant books, translations, authorship of O. Deych, which are of great interest to researchers of Ukrainian literature. It is hoped that a deep understanding of the scientific and creative heritage of a man who, having encyclopedic knowledge, being an intellectual and an outstanding scientist of his time (1893-1972), in the difficult conditions of the Soviet era, devoted himself to preserving cultural heritage and promoting Ukrainian literature outside Ukraine. Appropriate accents were placed through temporal and ideological layers, which prevented the good name of the scientist to take an honorable place in the history of Ukrainian culture. This motivates the relevance of intelligence.
