SENTENCES WITH ADJECTIVE ADVERBS IN V. DOMONTOVYCH’S NOVEL «DOCTOR SERAFICUS»

Abstract

The article deals with the semantic and syntactic features of sentencesexpressions with adjective adverbs on -o (-e) as components of the text structure of V. Domontovych’s novel «Doctor Seraficus». Substantiating its relevance, the author proceeds from the idea that the analysis of the linguistic means of any artistic whole is the basis of knowledge of the author’s linguistic thinking, his creative originality. The article interprets the concept of «semantic-syntactic structure of a sentence», shows that a simple sentence from the point of view of formal-syntactic organization can be semantically non-elementary, denote two or more sentences – mental equivalents of two or more extralingual situations. The roles that adverbs on -o (-e) can play in specific utterances are defined: а) independent, primary predicates, in particular in semantically elementary sentences; b) complicators / distributors not only of formal-syntactic, but also semantic-syntactic sentence structures. It is proved that the analyzed units in sentences of the second kind are secondary predicates. The text of the novel reveals both types of sentences with adjective adverbs on – o (-e): a) in which these units function as primary predicates – independently or as part of phrases with a semantically weakened core verb; b) in which they form semantically non-elementary structures by complicating or minimizing the situation / proposal. The types of predicate and subject syntaxes with which the analyzed adverbs interact in sentences-statements of V. Domontovych’s novel are established. It is shown that adverbs on -о (-е) as extenders / complicators of semantic-syntactic structure are attested in both sentences with dynamic and statal predicates, but units of the first type predominate. Among them, the most frequent are sentences with predicates of speech and intellectual activity. It is concluded that such structures are conditioned by the genre originality of the work – the genre of intellectual novel.
