Borys Humeniuk was one of the first professional writers in independent Ukraine to volunteer to defend his country. The writer’s texts, without exaggeration, “emerged from the trenches” of war, but at the same time they are characterized by the aesthetics of suffering and death, pain and despair, the lines are full of patriotic pathos, which creates an appealing mobilizing effect. B. Humeniuk artistically recreates the problems of human existence in the harsh conditions of war. The aim of the article is a textual analysis of the poem “Maybe you didn’t go to your son”, in which the writer artistically reflects the realities of the war that suddenly caught Ukrainians on the example of family life and death. The study uses a synthesis of the phenomenological method (the method of intentional orientation of consciousness in its expression through the artistic image allowed to establish the genre-compositional features of the poem), historicalbiographical (analysis of the conditions of writing poetry) and the method of receptive aesthetics (B. Humeniuk’s work as a problem of perception and reading). The research methodology is diversified by elements of psychoanalysis and structural interpretation of the literary text. It was found that the poem “Maybe you did not go to your son” is based on a classic ballad for Ukrainian literature plot: the mother sends her son to war However, the form of the poem, the system of images, compositional features, the use of pictorial and expressive artistic means allows us to speak about the innovative nature of the analyzed poetry, which is projected on the entire work of the writer about the events of the war. It has been studied that archetypal images of the house, the sun, the sky are interpreted as images-symbols of universal consciousness. Much attention is paid to the image of the house as an ideological and semantic unifying element of the poem. It was found that the writer artistically recreates the image of a warrior-knight, defender of his family and country, endowing him with nobility, justice, courage, sincerity, willingness to give for the freedom of life at any time. In the process of analyzing the image of a warrior, the emphasis is on the image of his hands, which is not only a way of protection from the enemy, but also a symbol of unity, brotherhood, life. In the poem “Maybe you didn’t go to your son” folklore motives are traced, which acquire a new sound from the writer. This is manifested in the fact that in the text, first, the folklore basis became the basis for the construction of the plot, the image of the mother – individualized and psychologically deepened; secondly, in the conciseness of the plot, which is built in the form of dialogue; thirdly, that, using the theme of recruiting songs, B. Humeniuk gave it a deeply socially significant meaning and at the same time poetized the boundless maternal love.
