Abstract

Summary. The article is devoted to the study of the core zone of anthroponymic space in Ernest Hemingway’s novel «For Whom the Bell Tolls». Literary and artistic anthroponyms have a huge impact on the formation of imagery, determine the ‘face’ of a work of art, and play a plot-forming role. The purpose of the study is to identify and analyse the core of the anthroponymic space of the novel; to interpret the proper names of the literary text as significant markers of the individual author’s worldview, reflecting the writer’s views on the world, man, culture, the nature of war, etc. Achieving this goal includes the following tasks: to identify the core anthroponyms used in the antiwar novel «For Whom the Bell Tolls»; to reveal the semantic and stylistic specificity of the names of the main characters of the novel; to determine their semantic and functional load and influence on the formation of the text’s imagery. The object of the study is the anthropoetonyms of the novel «For Whom the Bell Tolls». The subject of the study is the semantics and poetics of proper names belonging to the nuclear zone of the onomatopoeic space of the novel under study. The following research methods are used in the article: the descriptive method; interpretation and generalisation, which allowed to identify, systematise and analyse proper names; the contextual interpretation method (to determine the semantic load of literary and artistic anthroponyms), the method of etymological analysis (to find out the internal form of proper names). The scientific novelty of the research is that for the first time the core of the anthroponymic space of Ernest Hemingway’s novel «For Whom the Bell Tolls» was analysed. The author proves the textual, plot, and figurative role of anthropoetonyms, clarifies their semantic structure, and identifies naming paradigms. The anthroponymic space of the novel «For Whom the Bell Tolls» includes a large number of fictional and ‘real’ historical and cultural names that contain contextual – intertextual, explicit – hidden (implicit) meanings. The interpretation of the anthroponymic space allowed us to clarify the ideological concept of the novel and adequately describe the individual author’s picture of the world of the writer.
