LINGUISTIC MEANS OF IMPLICATIONS’ EXPRESSION IN MODERN ENGLISH JOURNALISM

In this article, we have studied linguistic means to express implications used in English newspapers’ informative texts and have systemized them according to morphological classification. It was found out that the most commonly used linguistic means of implications in English journalism are oxymoronic, hyperbolic, metonymic, euphemistic, antiphrasis and metaphoric implications expressed by nouns, adjectives and verbs; rarely expressed by conjunctions and prepositions and are used as means of emphasis or emotional coloring of the text to increase reader’s interest in publication. Four basic types of morphological classification of implications were defined. There are nominal, verbal, prepositional and mixed types of implications. It was found out that introducing implications provide emotional and expressive influence on a potential reader. To achieve aims and objectives of the research, we used the following methods: general scientific, linguistic, logical, analytical, method of pragmatic and structural analysis, and a method of calculation. The research material consists of 75 implicative statements formed by selective method chosen from studies of modern linguists, examples of phraseological and stylistic combinations and investigated materials of publication, such as articles of the most popular English editions “The Guardian”, “The Seattle Times”, “Washington Post”, “The New York Times”.
