DICTIONARY OF WEDDING VOCABULARY OF BOYKO’S DIALEСЕS: LETTER “Ж”

Abstract

Summary. One of the variants of organizing the regional dialect dictionary of wedding vocabulary on the examples of Boyko’s dialects is presented. It is based on available folklore and ethnographic materials, lexicographic and linguogeographical sources, corpora of dialect texts, archives of dialectological expeditions, and the author’s own records, collected by field method in the villages of Boyko’s region in Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions. The register of the dictionary covers, first of all, the names of the thematic group of wedding vocabulary, which are not mentioned in dictionaries of Boykoʼs dialects, as well as lexemes, which are recorded with other ceremonial semantics or with commonly used semantics. The rare words and expressions that we managed to record are undoubtedly valuable for lexicographic work of this type. Dictionary of wedding vocabulary of Boykoʼs dialects includes words, phrases, descriptive constructions, phraseological units, paremic units; fragments of coherent speech are proposed, thanks to which the general structure of the spiritual and material life of the boykos is modeled. Extensive illustrations not only reveal the textual behaviour of the names, but also fill the lexicon with the live speech of boykos. We are talking about mini-texts that are pronounced during the performance of one or another ritual or that are related to rituals, about established speech formulas ‒ wishes, instructions, ect. The lexicographic representation of the wedding lexicon of Boyko’s dialects, made possible thanks to dialectological, ethnographic, folkloristic sources, contributes to the modeling of a complete «picture» of the wedding vocabulary in Ukrainian dialects, as well, as scientific conclusions regarding the formation of the vocabulary of the Boyko’s dialects and its areal behavior in space and time. The presented fragment of the dictionary is the first step towards its arrangement, and therefore towards the emergence of a consolidated dictionary of the of wedding vocabulary of Ukrainian language, the creation of which presupposes, first of all, the need to develop unified principles of representation of the collected dialect material.
