THE ROLE OF COORDINATE PHRASES IN THE CREATION OF ALLEGORICAL MEANING IN TARAS SHEVCHENKO’S POEM “NEOPHYTES”

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the projection of the linguistic level, namely, the coordinate phrases, on the generation of allegorical content of T. Shevchenko’s poem “Neophytes”. It is noted that the work is the result of the poet’s updated view of the relationship between God and man. Based on the historical facts about the persecution of the first Christians in the Roman Empire, Taras Shevchenko created a large-scale allegorical canvas of the Russian Empire of that time. Attention is drawn to the originality of the depiction of the main characters, who are not static in the work, but undergo evolution. Alcide and his mother are a kind of ideals of fighters for the word of truth bequeathed by Jesus Christ. Alcide goes from being a reveler to a preacher and a practitioner of Christian precepts. Alcide’s mother undergoes an original spiritual transformation. The author reinterprets a woman as a personality, because in most his previous works the heroines are physically and spiritually weak to resist evil and injustice, while Alcide’s mother is transformed from a weak woman into a strong personality who continues her son’s mission. There are no detailed descriptions in the poem, but every stroke in the portrait of the characters is perfect. The author emphasizes the special semantic load of the coordinate phrases. It is emphasized that these syntactic units do not have an unambiguous interpretation in the national linguistics, but more and more linguists are calling for the distinction between coordinate phrases and subordinate ones and consider them as a combination of single-functional components based on the conjunctive relation. The analysis has shown that these syntaxes as sentence components have an important pragmatic potential and are important means of creating the artistic world of a work. In the poem “The Neophytes”, the coordinate phrases are designed to create allegorical images of Alcide, his mother, Caesar and the Roman Empire, which represent the lives of ordinary people who fight for freedom and the ruling classes of the Russian Empire. The dominant constructions are those with an uncoordinated link, as well as those with a copulative conjunction і, which emphasizes the expressiveness of the narrative. They are used to generate artistic details that perfectly depict the polyphony of allegorical images.
