THE TYPOLOGY OF CONCEPTS

Abstract

The rapid development of linguistics in the second half of the twentieth and early twentyfirst centuries has led to a change in the scientific and linguistic paradigm, from the isolated study of language in itself to the study of language in inseparable connection with a man. The consequence of this change was the emergence of new research areas, cognitive linguistics took its place among them with its key notion – concept. A large number of scientific researches of Ukrainian and foreign researchers are devoted to the study of concepts, and despite this, at this stage of development of cognitive linguistics there is no unified definition of the concept, because each linguistic school offers its own definition of this notion. A similar situation is observed with regard to the typology of concepts, as different scholars propose their own typology taking into account different parameters and approaches to the study of concepts. That is why the problem of typology of concepts remains one of the disputable problems in modern linguoconceptology. Existing approaches to the typology of concepts emphasize their complex nature, contribute to the understanding of their structure, content, purpose, etc. In the offered article the attempt to generalize various scientific approaches to typology of concepts from the point of view of cognitive linguistics is made. Among the classifications of concepts proposed in modern linguistics based on various aspects of their study, in our article we consider the following types of concepts based on the type of knowledge and degree of abstractness of the concept (mental pictures, schemes, concepts, frames, scenarios, gestalts), its complexity structures (single-level, multilevel, segmental), social affiliation (national, group, individual), lexical objectification (verbalized, nonverbalized), form of language explication (simple, complex) and according to the degree of internal structural organization (microconcepts, macroconcepts).
