THE CONCEPT “LOVE” AS ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF THE ENGLISH LINGUOCULTURE

Abstract

The article deals with the study of the concept “LOVE” as one of the fundamental concepts of the English linguoculture. The purpose of the paper is to consider the features of the functioning of the concept “LOVE” in the English literature on the material of the novel of J. Fowles “The collector”. The purpose of the paper determines the following tasks: to carry out a lexicographic analysis of the concept “LOVE”, to analyze the functioning of the concept “LOVE” based on the material of the novel of J. R. R. Tolkien. Fowles “The collector”. The article is based on the following research methods: analysis, synthesis, generalization, conceptual analysis, contextual analysis. The scientific novelty of the study is due to the deepening of the research results available in domestic science on the functioning of the concept “LOVE” in the English linguoculture. The results of the study can be used as a basis for further research of the concept “LOVE” in the English linguoculture. In this paper, 27 dictionary definitions were taken from 5 English explanatory online dictionaries (Collins English Dictionary, Oxford Advanced American Dictionary, American Heritage Dictionary, Merriam Webster Dictionary, Macmillan Dictionary). According to the results of lexicographic analysis, the concept of LOVE includes such meanings as: ’strong emotional or sexual attraction; feelings of attachment to a friend, family member’; ’a person involved in sexual or romantic relationships’; ’a token used at the end of a letter from close people’; ’a token used in communication between husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend, etc. As the result of the research, it was found that the concept “LOVE” is implemented in the English linguoculture in the following meanings: LOVE for PERSON, in the meaning of a strong sense of attachment and care for another person; LOVE for PERSON in the meaning of a sign of positive emotions; LOVE for PERSON in the meaning of a strong feeling, attachment to a person; in the meaning of LOVE for life, as the object of love is life; LOVE for PERSON in the meaning of a strong feeling, emotional and physical attraction; in the meaning of a strong feeling, emotional and physical connection; presented as sympathy, but not love, presented in the sentence as something that is always preferred, which causes pleasant sensations; in the sense of LOVE for person, where the emotional component prevails over the physical; the lexeme LOVE was implemented in the sense of LOVE for PARENTS, and denotes kinship feelings; in the sense of like something – to love something material, food, drinks.
