PARENTHETIC ELEMENTS IN THE ARTISTIC SPEECH OF F. S. FITZGERALD

Abstract

The individuality of a writer’s language is most clearly traced in the syntactic system of his works, so to find out the peculiarities of his idiostyle, it is important to analyze the syntactic features and determine the stylistic dominants of his works. The purpose of our research is to identify the characteristic features of the syntactic organization of Fitzgerald’s prose and determine the stylistic load of parenthetical units in the writer’s artistic speech. The original feature of Fitzgerald’s style is the use of complex constructions of coordinate and asyndetic connection, which are often complicated by parenthetic constructions. They provide the narration with dynamism, create a rhythmic pattern, which thanks to the melody expresses different emotional nuances. Thus, parenthetic constructions can be considered as linguistic and expressive means that distinguish the writer from other artists of the word. F. S. Fitzgerald’s prose reveals situational parentheses (which serve as a means of clarifying depicted events) and subjective-evaluative parenthetic constructions, which are means of combining the description of events and their simultaneous evaluation and characterization. They make it possible to create the completeness of the artistic image and reproduce the aesthetic meaning inherent to the work of fiction, develop text emotiveness and create an expressive and pragmatic field of artistic text. Parentheses also enable a dialogue with the reader and become a means of intimacy of the writer’s prose. They ensure the development of the content of the text and facilitate the full transmission of additional supporting information that the author considers important for the reader’s perception of his works. As a result of the research, it has been found out that the style of F.S. Fitzgerald is marked by the syntactic segmentation of the utterance with the weakening of syntagmatic connections between the parts. Therefore, we consider tracing other means of complicating sentence structures in the artistic speech of the writer and defining their stylistic functioning promising for further research.
