LEXICAL AND SEMANTIC GROUPS OF NEOLOGISMS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN ENGLISH

Abstract

The proposed article focuses on the emergence, enrichment and updating of the lexical structure of the English language during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, considers the process of emergence of new complex units, the dynamics of their semantics and their acquisition of new meanings; the appearance of new complex words related to the spread of coronavirus disease and its impact on the linguistic situation in modern newspaper discourse, identified trends in their activation. Lexical and semantic groups of neologisms related to the origin and spread of coronavirus infection have been singled out, namely: «Education», «Travel», «Social Life», «Health», «Culture», «Work». The widespread spread of the disease has been reflected not only in medicine, but also in all social spheres and in the lexical structure of many languages, including English. It is established that the most common among the innovations in the discourse of this period is the token COVID-19, a coronavirus that has become a source of widespread creation of new complex words. Chronologically, the article covers the period from early 2020 to the first half of 2021. The scientific work analyzes the state of study of this issue in the Ukrainian and English linguistic communities. General scientific methods (description, induction, deduction, introspection) were used to select and analyze language material and present research provisions. The material of the research is neologisms of coronavirus topics, taken from articles, corpora of vocabulary, dictionaries.
