RESEARCH OF SEMANTICS OF RELATIVE ADJECTIVES OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE (ON THE MATERIAL OF THE DICTIONARY OF THE UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE IN 20 VOLUMES)

Abstract

The article deals with the study of the semantics of relative adjectives of the Ukrainian language with the use of computer technology. The Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language in 20 volumes of the Ukrainian Language and Information Fund of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which operates in paper and electronic versions, was chosen as the source base. The electronic version is presented in two versions: the Virtual Lexicographic Laboratory «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language», which is a tool for compiling a 20-volume «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language» and conducting research, and the online «Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language in 20 volumes», which is freely available on site of the Ukrainian linguistic portal. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the semantic analysis of relative adjectives on the material of the «Dictionary of the Ukrainian language» in 20 volumes to create language and information tools focused on the implementation of semantic research in the electronic dictionary. Research methods – computer technology, lexicographic analysis, theory of semantic states. It is noted that a necessary condition for effective automation of electronic dictionaries for research on semantics is the requirement of explicit presentation of semantic information in them. Dictionary definitions relative adjectives with formulas of interpretation «Approx. to» and «Stack. to» only establish the fact of the connection of the meaning of adjectives with the lexical meanings of the nouns from which these adjectives are formed, while it must be presented explicitly in the interpretation of relative adjectives for effective automation of electronic dictionary during semantic research. A method of semantic analysis of relative adjectives in the 20-volume «Dictionary of the Ukrainian language» is proposed. One of the stages of developmen of multiparametric tools for semantic research of relative adjectives with non-explicit formulas of interpretation in the electronic explanatory dictionary is presented. For an in-depth study of the semantic structure of the Ukrainian adjective, the formalism of the theory of semantic states, developed by V. A. Shirokov, was used. The stages of concretization of the lexical meaning of a relative adjective in combination with a noun, definition of semantic classes, establishment of semantic relations are demonstrated, an example of explicit representation of the corresponding dictionary definition is given.
