THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE ENGLISH AND UKRAINIAN NEOLOGISMS COINED DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Abstract

The given research aims to compare the neologisms coined in reference to the global pandemic of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 in the English and Ukrainian languages and to analyse the ways of the translation of the newly-coined lexical units into the Ukrainian language. The authors summarized the ideas of national and foreign scientists related to the concept of the neologisms and the typical approaches towards their translation into the Ukrainian language; studied the variants of the translation of the newly-coined lexical units along with the new words and expressions and already existing words used in the new meanings into the Ukrainian language with the application of such ways of translation like transcription, transliteration, calquing, descriptive description and direct inclusion. The analysis of the given data comprises the usage of such methods as an analytical method, a comparative method, linguistic observation and generalization. In the course of the analysis, the definition of the term neocovidon as a special type of the newly coined lexical units that emerged as a result of the coronavirus disease has been stated. The typical examples of the coronavirus neologisms have been analysed, their meanings have been defined and the ways of their translation into Ukrainian have been suggested that signifies the novelty of the research. The relevance of the work is based on the novelty of the received results that are to facilitate the solution of the practical tasks related to the translation of the English neocovidons into the Ukrainian language. Having analysed an array of widely spread and frequently-used coronavirus neologisms, the authors have concluded that some difficulties can be encountered when translating them that are caused by the fact that they have not been included in the Ukrainian dictionaries. The way of coronaneologisms translations has been stated to be defined by its form and to be dependent on the sphere of their application.
